The Corner for Academic Advisement

CAREER INFORMATION

Finding a major in college is a struggle for many students (click here to read about this dilemma from an MSNBC reporter). The following information can assist students in their search for a major and satisfying career.

If I were to start a career search the first place I would go is to the Utah Mentor career exploration site. This site provides several guidance tools to help you find and identify your personal interests and specific careers that match these interests.

MEDICINE
I was listening to NPR the other day and happened to listen to an intern discussing her medical experience. Here is a link to the text. If you're interested in medicine you might find this interesting.

MyMajors is an excellent website for students and parents and it is FREE! Here are a few of its benefits.
http://www.mymajors.com

1. MyMajors offers recommendations for students to consider –recommendations that may support them in their decisions, provide a basis for advisement, or open them to new ideas.
2. MyMajors displays links to colleges and universities offering 100 different majors. MyMajors is becoming the site to easily compare and contrast how majors reflect different approaches and philosophies at a range of diverse institutions.
3. MyMajors provides extensive, yet selected, information about all of the most common majors offered at colleges and universities.
4. MyMajors summarizes a student’s online interview in an easy to read downloadable report.
5. It causes students to reflect on why majors were recommended or not recommended.
6. It provides a neutral basis for counselors and parents to interact with their students when they seek advice.
7. It is also useful to parents, who many students still rely on for support and advice.

Here is another site that has some information to help you explore some careers and schools. It is the Princeton Review site. Here is a link to this site. The Princeton Review

SUU WEBCT ACCESS

Sometimes students find that they can't access webct. Here are a few hints.

1. Usually your web id will be your first name and last name without any spaces. Your password is most often your birthdate.

2. Sometimes you can find your T number and then change your password. Go to the Tnumber/username link to look up your information. You will need to have your birthdate and your SSN. This link will take you to the page to allow you to change your password. You will need your username and your Tnumber.

2. If that doesn't work try calling this number and visiting with the help desk. Since the University can only release information to the student, if is important that you call and not your parents. The number is: 586-1994

Attention Student Athletes If you want to participate in Collegiate Athletics, it is important for you to register with the NCAA Clearinghouse. The Clearinghouse has several requirements that you must meet to be eligible to play Collegiate Athletics. Visit this site to find out more information.

Technology If you can't afford microsoft office, here is an excellent software source to use for your word processing needs. This is a free download and it is called open office.
