What is Academic Rigor?


Academic Rigor

Students who take harder classes in high school do better in their future higher education. They have higher rates of Bachelor degree completion, and they do better academically.

Academic Competiveness Grant

Students who take harder classes will be eligible for increased federal financial awards. The Federal Government recently passed a legislative initiative that will grant financially eligible students the opportunity to be awarded the academic competiveness grant. This program adds additional funds to students federal student aid.

To qualify for this grant students must have taken a rigorours course sequence in high school. The federal government have defined this rigorous course pattern in the following documents. Rigorous Courses Defined for Utah (MS Word Doc)

Utah students shine in math but writing is dim - By Sheena McFarland

Utah fares better than other states in college affordability and preparation for college math, but lags in writing preparation and ethnic student college enrollment, a report to be released today shows.

The National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education report, "Measuring Up 2006," compares Utah's system of higher education against systems in other states in six areas: preparation, participation, affordability, completion, benefits and learning. View Full Story
